New Things: Aerial Silk Class

Have you guys ever been to Cirque du Soleil? We have a resident one, La Nouba, in Orlando and  I am borderline obsessed with it. I've only been once because tickets are ridiculously expensive, but I think about it all the time. A little while ago, a boy my sister and I went to school with came to Orlando on the Immortal World Tour. Basically an entire Cirque show dedicated to Michael Jackson. We got to go backstage and then watch one of the most incredible shows in the history of ever. I wasn't even a big fan of Michael Jackson before, but after seeing that tribute, I think he was a pretty stand-up guy (in some areas).

Part of the reason I love Cirque is because it celebrates the human body as art. I love watching dancers, yogis, gymnasts all for this reason. I think the human body is beautiful, and I love anything that celebrates it. I also love seeing what human beings are capable of, how limitless we are. It's all very magical and makes me feel astonished by and grateful for this life I'm living.

So I decided to take an aerial silk class last weekend! I have this vague mantra that governs my life: be the kind of person you admire/create the kind of life you most desire. That's the first time I've verbalized it, and seeing it rhyming there is making me a little uncomfortable so what I basically mean is: I want to do cool stuff. All the things I really love about people and the kind of lives which make me breathless - well, I want to be that; I want to do that. It's the reason I took ballet for an entire semester, and it's what led to be hanging upside down supported only by silk last weekend.

What surprised me about it was how not-terrifying and incredibly fun it was. I wasn't even a little bit scared, and I'm scared of everything.

I had to learn a lot of pretty complicated movements with my feet to get higher and set up for poses. I don't really use my feet for much (besides, like, walking) and trying to get them to tie knots etc. took a little maneuvering. I can't explain what a fun feeling it is to be in the air on silk; I felt graceful even though the photos proved otherwise. I signed up for four more classes, and I can't wait until I can get so high that it feels like I'm flying!

Have any of you tried it before? Or done anything else new and exciting recently?

Every now and then I sign up for an "adult gymnastics" class, which always results in me being sore after but super pumped up!

:) This looks like lots of fun!

  5. I took a silks class a few times last year and it was SO fun! The only part that was kind of horrible was the way my foot felt like a sausage every time I wrapped it up to stand on it! lol

  6. I went to a charity dinner the other day where the entertainment were dangers like this. Was really mesmerising, borderline impossible.

  7. Exciting!! I actually bought a groupon to try an aerial class, but I never got to use it. :( Now I really, really, really regret that... and I'm determined to go to a class! It looks like so much fun!
